Since 2005, Connecticut veterans have visited wounded soldiers in Walter Reed and Bethesda Military Hospitals to personally thank them for their service and sacrifices and to give them packages of gift cards and product donations. Volunteers representing Operation Gift Cards have handed out over 10,505 thank you kits so far.
One of those volunteers is Allen Gumpenberger, Alpha’s director of advocacy services. He recently traveled to the military hospitals in Washington D.C. and Bethesda, Maryland to visit the troops along with six other fellow Connecticut veterans.
“The veterans need to know that someone appreciates them,” said Gumpenberger. “When they return, there’s no welcome home celebration. One day they’re in the bushes, the next they’re on the streets.”
Gumpenberger said that Operation Gift Cards is “a way to say ‘Thanks. You made a great sacrifice. There are people in Connecticut who care about you.’ ”
